"My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my savior for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm and he as scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he has made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever." Luke 1:46 -55
The Sodality is a Marian group within the St. Augustine community, with a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Organized in 1892, the Sodality is the oldest society of women and men at St. Augustine Church. We are preparing to celebrate 125 years of faith and service. We also have a Junior Sodality, open to young women and men of the parish aged 12–18 who have been confirmed.
The Sodality seeks to provide a deep spiritual formation to its members and to foster a genuine love for Mary and for all humankind. We encourage Sodalists to seek to live virtuous lives by abiding in the moral teachings of the Church, and we facilitate the sanctification of Sodalists to equip them for the work of building up the Kingdom of God on Earth. The Sodality sponsors programs in liturgy, evangelization, ecumenism, and community outreach.
The Saint Augustine Sodality endeavors to preserve the rich heritage of Saint Augustine as the Mother Church of African Americans in the Nation’s Capital by seeking to not only to nourish the spiritual lives of its members, but also to reach out, in loving response, to the needs of its neighbors. We proclaim ourselves as Sodalists of Mary and as her children by promoting devotion to the Rosary, by seeking to intimately know Christ Jesus through the intercession of His Blessed Mother and by the example of our lives.
Candidates for membership in the Sodality are expected to attend Sodality general membership meetings prior to applying for candidacy. These meetings are held every first Sunday. All candidates must attend mandatory trainings before they can be installed as Sodalists. New members are received by the moderator at a solemn reception in May.
We celebrate Mass together on the first Sunday of each month – 8:00 a.m. Mass during the months of October, November, April, May, and June; and at the 10:00 a.m. Mass from December through March. We then meet immediately after Mass in the St. Augustine School cafeteria.
