The Greater DC community has been awakened to persistent threats to public health and economic security as well as the ongoing shadow of racism in this country. What may have been lost in conversation about meeting these unprecedented challenges is a consideration of how they may be rooted in our fractured relationship to our Mother Earth. As Pope Francis said, “A truly ecological approach always becomes a social approach, it must integrate questions of justice in debates about the environment, so as to hear both the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor.” With emerging findings in the science of environmental health, Pope Francis’s most impactful encyclical, Laudato Si, offers us a new paradigm in which to see how COVID-19, racism, and poverty are linked to environmental degradation. This presentation will explore how the faith and health communities can partner to meet these challenges.
