"Speak out for those who cannot speak, for the rights of all the destitute. Speak out, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy." - Proverbs 31:8-9
Our Mission
The St. Augustine Pastoral Council established the Social Justice and Social Services Standing Committee as its instrument of service to the poor and the oppressed in our midst. We are guided by scripture, Catholic Social Teaching, church doctrine & lived experience. Our ministry is for everyone: DC/VA/MD residents, senior citizens, young moms or dads, retired workers, virtual advocates throughout the country, empty-nesters, religious...ANYONE and EVERYONE!
We challenge decision-makers to make policy decisions that are equitable, people-centered and draw communities closer to the dignified life that God wants for all of us. Join us to work on an issue that you are passionate about, to help draw our world closer to the liberative and just existence that God calls for His people or just to meet new parishioners.
We will work to unrig the persistent systemic inequalities through our campaign, Let Us Dream. a powerful movement for racial, economic, and environmental justice. Rooted in Christian Gospel values, Catholic Social Teaching, and the principles of justice, equity, and inclusivity, we aim to amplify marginalized voices, challenge oppressive structures, and mobilize communities toward meaningful action.
Some of the issues we work on are:
Keeping social safety net programs funded
Livable wages & green jobs
Green job training
Black Equity Through Homeownership (B.E.T.H.), a WIN campaign
Clean energy sources in homes, especially in public and lower-income housing, and city buildings, a WIN campaign
Economic development that prioritizes people, not just business
Are you ready to put your faith into action to create a more just and equitable world?
Everyone is welcome to join our monthly meetings. We discuss social justice issues, events and campaigns relevant to our parish, the DC community, our local Virginia and Maryland counties and the world around us. We are building power for the changes we need in our communities and need your voice. Opportunities for advocacy range from signing a petition or posting on social media to attending an online training, mobilizing volunteers by phone/text to attend an event or attending an in-person rally or march.
Take the next step! Submit the form and someone from the Social Justice Advocacy Ministry will be in touch!
